01.02.06 Monday

There was not a lot of action this week, with most of the Gordon Conference teams idle, but there were still several upsets, noticeably in the Somerset County Tournament. Still, not a whole lot of movement from last week except at the bottom of the poll. SCT champion Montgomery took out Ridge with a 3-0 semifinal win, and Ramapo slides in after beating Fair Lawn and tying Indian Hills to remain atop the NBIAL, pushing idle Princeton out due to its weak schedule. In two weeks, we should have a better idea of where CVC teams stack up.

Top 20 (records as available through 12/31/05)

  1 — Seton Hall Prep (3-0-2, 2-0-2 Gordon) Last Week – 1

         This Week: 1/2 vs. BC, 1/6 @ Del, 1/8 @ BC

We can finally settle the No. 1 spot on the ice Friday night with the best rivalry in the state.

  2 — Delbarton (4-1-1, 3-0-1 Gordon) Last Week – 2

This Week: 1/3 vs. BE, 1/6 vs. SHP, 1/8 @ DBP

Unless, of course, the two teams tie, in which case we’ll have plenty of arguing over the top spot.

  3 — Pope John (4-1-2, 1-1-2 Gordon) Last Week – 3

         This Week: 1/6 @ SJV, 1/7 @ Burke Catholic (N.Y.)

Lions should have no trouble holding serve in this spot.

  4 — Don Bosco Prep (5-2, 3-2 Gordon) Last Week – 4

This Week: 1/4 @ CBA, 1/8 vs. Del

Bosco will have a chance to make a point (or two) of its own Sunday but cannot look past the CBA game.

  5 — St. Augustine Prep (6-0, 5-0 Southern Red) Last Week – 5

This Week: 1/5 @ TRN, 1/6 vs. MD

Hermits spent their off-week picking up some non-league games and return to Southern Red action with a pair of tough games.

  6 — St. Peter’s Prep (3-1-1, 1-1-1 Gordon) Last Week – 7

This Week: 1/2 @ Fordham Prep (N.Y.), 1/6 vs. CBA

Friday’s game should prove a lot for the Marauders, who have only one glamour victory so far.

  7 — Toms River North (7-1, 3-1 Southern Red) Last Week – 9

This Week: 1/5 vs. SA, 1/6 @ RBC

Mariners climbing the charts thanks to other teams’ losses but can claim the division’s top spot with a win of their own Thursday.

  8 — Randolph (5-2-1, 3-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 8

This Week: 1/2 vs. Jef, 1/4 vs. WE, 1/6 @ Pin

Despite slip-up in Middletown North tie, the Rams’ speed frightens every public school out there.

  9 — Morristown-Beard (5-2, 4-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 6

This Week: 1/4 vs. Jef, 1/5 @ Hun

Crimson embarrassed in 3-0 loss to West Morris but had a huge shot advantage and are still a formidable foe.

10 — Morris Knolls (7-1, 3-1 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 11

This Week: 1/3 vs. Pin, 1/7 vs. Men

Golden Eagles had a pair of impressively dominant wins over Morris Hills (8-3) and Vernon (7-1).

11 — Chatham (6-2, 3-2 MCSSIHL Mennen) Last Week – 12

This Week: 1/5 vs. ML, 1/7 vs. WMC

Cougars riding high on the strength of that win over Knolls and should pick up two wins before their Jan. 11 date with BR.

12 — CBA (2-3-2, 0-3-2 Gordon) Last Week – 14

         This Week: 1/4 vs. DBP, 1/6 @ SPP, 1/7 @ BC

I know they’re in last place, but it says here the Colts will win at least one of their three games this week.

13 — Bergen Catholic (1-4-2, 1-3-1 Gordon) Last Week – 13

This Week: 1/2 @ SHP, 1/7 vs. CBA, 1/8 vs. SHP

Crusaders’ lone win was 5-0 result over SJV, which is keeping them ahead of the Lancers for now.

14 — St. John Vianney (4-2-1, 1-2-1 Gordon) Last Week – 15

         This Week: 1/6 vs. PJ

Lancers have been anything but convincing against fellow private schools.

15 — Bridgewater-Raritan (6-1, 4-0 Central Red) Last Week – 10

This Week: 1/4 @ Cra, 1/6 vs. Mclr

Upset loss to Hillsborough (1-0) should serve as a wake-up call for division favorites.

16 — Paramus Catholic (5-1-2, 1-0-2 Northern Red) Last Week – 16

This Week: 1/6 @ Cli, 1/7 vs. Bay

Paladins on thin ice after narrow win over Mountain Lakes, but there’s something to be said for getting results.

17 — St. Joseph Metuchen (3-1-2, 2-0-2 Central Red) Last Week – 18

This Week: 1/2 @ Cra, 1/4 vs. Academy New Church (Pa.), 1/7 @ WE

Falcons got exactly what rankings would predict with one-goal win over Red Bank Catholic.

18 — Montgomery (7-1, 3-0 Central White) Last Week – NR

This Week: 1/3 vs. Ber, 1/7 @ MKA

Cougars vault into the top 20 with Somerset County title, avenging their only loss this year on the way.

19 — Ramapo (7-0-1, 7-0-1 NBIAL) Last Week – NR

         This Week: 1/7 @ NH

I’m not on the bandwagon yet, but you have to reward the first-place team in what is becoming a decent league.

20 — Indian Hills (6-1-2, 5-0-2 NBIAL) Last Week – 19

This Week: 1/3 vs. PkV, 1/7 vs. Dem

The Braves handled a tough week very well but remain in second place after tying Ramapo.

Dropped Out:
No. 17 Ridge (4-2-2, 1-1-2 Central Red)

No. 20 Princeton (8-0, 6-0 CVC Colonial)
